Travelling light allows you to enjoy your travel experience better. Imagine taking 4 heavy bags with you when you travel. That would certainly be very inconvenient especially if you have to take public transport to go from the airport to your hotel, and back. It also makes it nearly impossible for you to get around during stopovers or if you’re scheduled for a tour as soon as you arrive and have no time to leave your bags at the hotel.
So, if you’re going on holiday soon, here are some tips on how to travel light:
A lot of people find packing for a trip to be quite an ordeal which is why you will need to prepare for it. The first thing you need is a small bag that you can carry up to 10kg. Now you’re probably wondering how in the world you’re going to fit 7-days worth of luggage in one small bag. But really, it’s not that hard. All you need to remember is this: take very little.
You are likely to see people in the airport tugging along large bags that weigh 40-50 pounds each. There are only two reasons for this: (1) They’re going to be away for a long time, and (2) They didn’t have enough time to plan what to take on their trip, so they took their entire closet with them!
Make a checklist of the things you really NEED to take (emphasis on “need”). Take enough clean underwear, a few socks, some sleepwear, two pairs of jeans, shorts, two pairs of shoes, and a few shirts. Check the weather in the place you’re going and take the appropriate clothes. Take as few gadgets as possible—hey, you’re going on a vacation! If you’re planning to bring your xbox, iPad, iPhone, and laptop with you, you might as well stay home.
Remember to take only the essentials. Unless you’re going to some remote island, you’ll likely find most of the things you’ll need there. Besides, taking a few clothes for your trip will allow you to buy souvenir items during your trip (such as a Bienvenue à Paris shirt!)
Packing is an art so if you’re just going to toss all your stuff inside your bag, you’re going to waste a lot of valuable space. Fold heavy items (such as a pair of jeans) in alternating layers, and then roll small items (such as shirts and underwear), and then fit them into all the spaces in between.
You’re allowed to take a small bag with you when you board the plane. You can place your makeup, gadgets, passport, travel docs, wallet, and other important items inside your carry-on bag.
You’re probably wondering why we’ve included luggage travel insurance here. OK so it’s not going to help you travel light but it’s going to save you a lot of headaches in case you lose your luggage during your trip. Travel insurance also covers medical and health expenses, flight cancellations, tour cancellations, and accidents. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and if you want to have the best travel experience, then having luggage travel insurance is what you need.
So there you have it—5 ways on how to travel light. Enjoy your trip!
